In short
Countrywise collects no personal data. There is no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Your language, home country, passports, trips, visited countries, learned words and settings are stored on your phone, and in your phone’s own backup (iCloud or Google) if you use one; we never see them. Removing the app removes them from the phone.
The app goes online to download countries and the day’s travel advice, and to send a report when you write one. What it sends, and what happens to it, is below.
Countries and travel advice
When you open a country, the app downloads that country’s pack. Each time it starts, it fetches the day’s travel-advice summary and checks whether the countries you saved have an update. All of this comes from our content delivery network at Amazon Web Services. The request carries no name, account or device identifier; the network needs your IP address to send the files, and we keep no record of who downloaded what.
Reports of a mistake
When you report a mistake, the app sends the item, your language, the content version, the category you chose and your note to our server in the EU (Frankfurt). Nothing else: no name, no account, no device identifier. If you are offline, the report waits on your phone and is sent later. The server adds when the same report first and last arrived and how often. We keep a report as long as we need it to correct the content.
To stop abuse, the server counts how many reports one connection sends in an hour. It does not keep your IP address, only a code made from it and the hour with a secret; the count stops counting after two hours and is then deleted.
Purchases
The one-time purchase is made through the App Store or Google Play. We receive no payment details and no name; Apple and Google process the payment under their own privacy policies.
Reminders
The reminder before a trip is a notification your phone schedules itself. Nothing is sent to us or to any other service to deliver it.
Share cards and backups
A photo you pick for a share card stays on your phone; the card is made on your phone, and you decide where to share it. A backup is a file made on your phone with your countries, trips and settings, and you choose where to keep it.
This website
This website sets no cookies, has no analytics and loads nothing from other services, its fonts included. Our hosting provider needs your IP address to send you the pages; we keep no record of visits.
Who is responsible
The developer of Countrywise, reachable at hello@countrywise.app.
We rely on our legitimate interest in running the app and this website, and in correcting the mistakes you report.
Your rights
As we keep nothing that identifies you, there is usually nothing about you for us to find. You can still ask what we hold, have it corrected or deleted, object to its use, and complain to a data protection authority. Write to hello@countrywise.app.
